LAS CRUCES - Israel Ramirez, charged with intentional child abuse which resulted in the death of 5-month-old Kamilah Hernandez, was indicted by a grand jury.

Ramirez, 23, is also charged with intentional child abuse resulting in great bodily harm. Both charges are first-degree felony counts. Kamilah, the daughter of Ramirez's girlfriend, Danielle Lujan, died April 19 from injuries consistent with long-term child abuse.

Ramirez was released from the Doña Ana County Detention Center on May 12 on a $25,000 secured bond and currently remains out of custody. His arraignment and trial dates have not yet been scheduled.

Lujan, 23, is also charged in her daughter's death on one first-degree felony count of reckless abuse of a child resulting in death and one misdemeanor count of failure to report child abuse or neglect. She was denied bond May 13 and was indicted by a grand jury two weeks ago.

An arraignment in her case is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 14 in district court.
