An infant is in a Florida hospital in serious condition after suffering internal injuries and Valdosta police say they have arrested and charged the man they allege to be behind the crime.

23-year-old Alexander Mills Culbreth was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and aggravated child molestation following the investigation by Valdosta police.

Investigators say the investigation started Monday night after getting called by South Georgia Medical staff about the injuries.

According to investigators, they allege that Culbreth was watching the child was the mother was at work. When the mother returned home, she realized that something was wrong and took her child to SGMC. Once at the hospital, tests showed that the child had fractures to the skull and internal injuries that were consistent with an assault. Evidence collected by detectives and crime scene personnel showed led VPD to believe that Culbreth was responsible for the injuries.

The child was later taken by helicopter for care in Florida.

“This is a tragic incident and it is hard to believe that someone could hurt such a small, innocent child. Our thoughts go out to this little girl as we continue to pray for her recovery,” said VPD Chief Leslie Manahan.
